An apostille is a certification from the secretary of state, of a notarized document, that will be used in a different country. The apostille validates the seal and signature of the notary on the document so it can be accepted in a different country.

You need an apostille for a notarized document that needs to be accepted in a different country. For example a power of attorney or a certified copy of a passport. Affidavits, diplomas, warrants and trademarks are other examples of documents that need an apostille.

The first step is making sure you get the document notarized properly. If the notarization isn’t done properly the state could reject the apostille, costing you money and time. After it is notarized properly, you will need to get it authenticated by the state, providing the apostille. Documents will be sent back to you or the other country automatically, wherever you prefer.
